Malaysia's Spaceport Partnership Paves the Way for Sarawak's Aerospace Ambitions

KUCHING — Astrum Dynamic Sdn Bhd, Spaceport Malaysia, and Spaceport Malaysia Sarawak have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance aerospace infrastructure, technology, education, research, and space economy initiatives in Sarawak.

The signing ceremony, held at a local hotel today, officially marked the establishment of Spaceport Malaysia Sarawak, which will oversee the state’s space-related development programs and activities.

Spaceport Malaysia President Norul Ridzuan Zakaria stated that the MoU facilitates collaborative studies and research on the development of the aerospace industry.

"Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had earlier expressed the vision of developing satellite launch facilities in Sarawak, aiming to position the state as an aerospace industry hub.

"However, the launch methodology has yet to be discussed. The proposed launch site, located in Sematan, has been identified.

"This MoU enables us to conduct studies on suitable methodologies, which will later be presented to the Sarawak Government," he said during a press conference following the signing ceremony.

Astrum Dynamic, a Sarawak-based company, was established to focus on aerospace industry development in collaboration with Spaceport Malaysia.

Spaceport Malaysia serves as a strategic platform for Sarawak to develop its space-related activities and ecosystems. It is one of more than 35 spaceport organizations worldwide and boasts strong partnerships within the European aerospace consortium, including Thales Alenia and ALTEC Space.

As part of ongoing internal discussions and technical research, a proposal has emerged to implement air-launch systems and super-spectrum satellite deployment, alongside the establishment of Spaceport Malaysia Sarawak.

Also present at the signing ceremony were Spaceport Malaysia Sarawak President Nasruddin Mohamad, and Astrum Dynamic representatives Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Ahmad and Mohd Mehraj Wahap.
